Markus Ketteler, MD

ASN Biography

Dr. Markus Ketteler is Professor of Medicine and currently serves as Division Chief of Nephrology at the Klinikum Coburg in Coburg, Germany. In 2018, he was additionally appointed as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at this institution. Further, he is chairman of the Medical Board of a large German not-for-profit dialysis provider (KfH; “Kuratorium für Dialyse und Nierentransplantation e.V.”). His research focus is aimed at the understanding of pathomechanisms involved in extraosseous calcifications and of phosphate and vitamin D metabolism in CKD. He is author on more than 180 peer-reviewed publications (including The Lancet, JASN, J Clin Invest, Kidney Int etc.). He is on the editorial boards of nephrology journals such as JASN and NDT (theme editor), acted as a KDIGO workgroup member on CKD-MBD guidelines from 2006-2009, and co-leads the German Calciphylaxis Registry. He is currently Council member and “Chairman of the Administrative Office” (CAO) of the ERA EDTA (2012-2018). Recently, he acted as co-chair of the KDIGO Controversies Conference on CKD-MBD which took place in Madrid in October 2013, and was appointed as co-chair for the update of the KDIGO CKD-MBD guidelines in 2016.
