Barbara S. Gillespie, MD, FASN

ASN Biography

Barbara S. Gillespie, MD, MMS, FASN, is a board-certified adult nephrologist who completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) and her nephrology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. She is currently a Vice President and the Therapeutic Head of Nephrology at Fortrea (formerly Labcorp Drug Development) where she continues to support sponsors on their clinical development and trials for kidney diseases. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. Barbara currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Kidney Health Initiative and NephroNet. She is on the Steering Committee for the NKF CKD Patient Network (Registry), the Stakeholder Engagement Group for PREPARE-NS (an FDA grant funded effort to define COAs for Nephrotic Syndrome), and on several Steering Committees for NephCure. She has served on several KHI Workgroups, including Surrogate Endpoint Work (IgAN, FSGS, C3G), Peds IgAN, Challenges of including CK patients in CV Outcomes Trials, and co-chairs the Steering Committee of the APOL1-KD Workgroup.

She has participated in several Advisory Boards and/or Stakeholder Panels including the 2018 FDA/EMA/NKF Workshop on Renal Endpoints (Stakeholder Committee), 2019 NKF SGLT2i Workshop (faculty), 2020 NKF/FDA for Trial Considerations for Early Stages of Common CKD (Workgroup Co -Chair), 2018 NephCure/FDA Clinical Trial Collaborative (Workgroup Co -Chair), ISN’s Advancing Clinical Trials (workgroup for Patient Engagement), UNC's PCORI grant on Building Research Capacity in the Dialysis Community (Stakeholder Advisory Panel), and the global Standardized Outcomes for Nephrology (SONG) Initiative. Barbara has also served on an Independent Endpoint Adjudication Committee for a global CKD and CV Outcomes program.

She is a past Associate Medical Director at a small local dialysis unit, a current Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, and received board certification in Internal Medicine in 2004 and in Nephrology in 2006 & 2015.
